In the past few days I have had many interactions with companies and organisations and each one of them presents a new challenge and new opportunities and the next few lines summarises a couple of them.

The first is a global facilities provider, one of the largest companies in the world and they are undergoing a globalisation and standardisation program spanning 5 years and are in year 1. The question is how to develop the business ahead of the competition in the areas that are planned for years 2,3,4 and 5?

The second, a leading telecom operator is looking to get ahead of the pack and reduce churn by developing and delivering value added services. Given the traditional nature of the business and the culture how can this be achieved?

In both cases the organisations are faced with a dilemma – keep the existing ’stuff’ running whilst innovating to get ahead or stay in the game. It’s not easy, but it’s possible.

The structures and measurement mechanisms of many organisations create obstacles in the way of innovation, often opportunities for improvement can be seen but are not acted upon. In other instances a process or forum for enablement is missing. In order to achieve innovation, traditional barriers must be taken away, small dynamic teams of multi-disciplined individuals with complementary personalities need to be empowered to initiate and drive the innovation process.
